Activated charcoal is a fine black powder made from wood or other materials that have been exposed to very high temperatures in an airless environment, and in the presence of a gas that causes the charcoal to become very porous. The first recorded use of charcoal for medicinal purposes was found in Egyptian papyri around 1500 BC as a method of staving off infection from open wounds. It benefits the skin by drawing oil, dirt and other harmful substances from clogged pores due to its adsorption powers leaving behind a clear, even toned complexion.
Research now shows juniper berry essential oil contains over 87 different active constituent compounds, including strong antioxidants, antibacterials and antifungals that help to protect your skin from free radicals, cleanse, tighten and tone it and assist in improving the smooth appearance of your skin.
The Juniper Berry plant, a member of the cypress family, ranging from small bushy shrub to tree, can found growing all over the Northern Hemisphere. The berries are dried and ground before distillation to create Juniper Berry Essential Oil, with a fresh, rich-balsamic, woody, pine like aroma. The ancient Greeks burned juniper branches to combat epidemics. The English burned it as well, and hoped its magical powers would repel evil spirits. Remains of juniper berries have been found in the tombs of ancient Egyptians.
Sweet marjoram boasts a wide range of health benefits but for the purpose of soap its one claim is that it can kill bacteria.
Sweet Marjoram is a perennial herb gorgeously scented with a light bright sweet pine and citrus smell. It is indigenous to Cyprus and Southern Turkey and was known to the Greeks and Romans as a symbol of happiness.
