Frankincense comes from the Boswellia tree native to the southern Arabian peninsula, northeast Africa, and parts of India. Long prized for its spicy, woodsy aroma, raw frankincense is still harvested much as it was thousands of years ago, by slashing the bark, which is called striping, and allowing the exuded resin to bleed out and harden. These hardened resins are called tears. The essential oil is made by steam distilling the resin, or “tears” of the tree.
